Florida Gateway College Library turned their small, unwelcoming children’s area into a bright, colorful quiet area for children with many added resources and features. Before the renovation, the children’s area had no suitable computers which meant using a non-filtered, non-CIPA compliant student computer; leading to occasional problems with the noise level bothering other students. After consulting with FGC’s IT department, the library was able to get two computers. One of the computers was programmed with educational games and the other is for students to access in case of needing to be nearby the child. The library was also given a grant of $3,914 to purchase items to transform the space, including, but not limited to: colorful alphabet rug, adjustable computer desk and chairs, two bookcases with colorful bins, small table and chairs, two upholstered chairs, round and square floor cushions, board books, young reader books, puzzles, DVDs, blocks, posters, crayons and coloring books, and two lap desks. They also ordered two iPad Air 2s with soft cases, three animal headphone sets (along with sanitary covers), child’s keyboard and mouse, eight software bundles for the PC, and 27 apps for the iPads. The Family Friendly Study Space has made a big difference in the library and parents are pleased to be able to schoolwork while their children play nearby in a quiet area.
