Per IRSC Policy, the use of any tool or assistive technology for the completion of coursework must be authorized by your instructor first. Faculty may indicate in their syllabus whether and how generative AI can be used in class.
Plagiarism is defined as the act of using someone else's work or ideas without giving proper credit or attribution. Since chatbots generate new text in response to prompts, using material from GAI could be considered more like ghostwriting than plagiarism. The use of GAI for coursework, if not sanctioned by the instructor, would be considered cheating whether or not it was considered plagiarism.
If you choose to use ChatGPT or some other generative AI technology for writing, be sure you are transparent about your use of it with your instructors and audience. The ethical use of generative AI depends on the context in which it is used and the expectations of the individuals or organizations involved.
For optimal learning, please ensure that all graded assignments in this course are completed independently, without utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI). Avoid using AI tools to generate any content (text, video, audio, images, code, etc.) for assignments or classroom exercises. Submitting AI-generated content as your own work (e.g., directly copying or paraphrasing AI-generated material) violates IRSC’s Student Standards of Conduct. If you have inquiries regarding the use of generative AI in this course, feel free to contact me via email or in person.

Students are encouraged to explore the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, for assignments and assessments. When using such tools, it is crucial to acknowledge and cite them appropriately, following the guidelines outlined in the APA Style Guide (or MLA Style Guide), including specifying the tool's version used.
Submitted work should include both the exact prompt used to generate the content and the AI’s complete response in an Appendix. Since AI-generated content may not always be accurate or suitable, it is the responsibility of each student to evaluate the validity and relevance of any generative AI output they submit. Failure to ensure accuracy, validity, or appropriateness in the submitted work may result in partial credit. Any deviations from these guidelines will be considered violations of IRSC’s Student Standards of Conduct.
Please note that "plagiarism, cheating, and acceptable assistance" expectations may vary among courses and instructors. If you have any questions about what is permissible for a specific course or assignment, please get in touch with me via email.

Some assignments in this course may allow or encourage the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT. The assignment prompt on Canvas will specify when AI use is permitted. Otherwise, the default rule is that the use of generative AI is not allowed.
When generative AI tools are permitted, it is essential to acknowledge and cite their use properly. For example, if you generated an entire document using ChatGPT and subsequently edited it for accuracy, your submission must include a statement such as “I generated this work using ChatGPT and edited for accuracy.” When paraphrasing or quoting smaller segments of AI-generated content, it is necessary to acknowledge and cite them following the APA Style Guide (or MLA Style Guide). Each student is responsible for evaluating the validity and relevance of any AI output they submit. Failure to ensure accuracy or appropriateness in the submitted work may result in a deduction of credit. Any deviations from these guidelines will be considered violations of IRSC’s Student Standards of Conduct.
