One hundred and fifty years after she lived and wrote, Jane Austen has become, in the words of Variety, magazine, a worldwide mega celebrity. How did this unmarried poor relation from a middle-class family of clergymen come to write the passionate, witty novels about love and money that have made her one of the most popular writers of all time? How much of what she wrote was taken from what she really lived? Austen's obstinacy made escape impossible -- she would not consider marrying without love. She died poor and single, and thought of her books as her children.

Pictures of perfection make me sick and wicked, Jane Austen wrote to her niece Fanny Knight a few months before she died. Yet most traditional accounts of Austen's life have insisted on portraying her as just such a picture of perfection.

Jane Austen is not usually associated with children - especially since she had none of her own. But there are in fact more children in her novels than one might at first think. This book, by one of the world's leading authorities on Austen, looks at both the real and the literary children in her life - children seen and unseen (and dead); children as models of behaviour, good and bad; as objects of affection, amusement, usefulness, pity, regret, jealousy, resentment; children in the way; children as excuses; children as heirs. In the process it casts fascinating light on a hitherto largely ignored aspect of her work and the age in which she lived.

This collection brings together a selection of recent representative critical essays on Austen from a variety of perspectives. All of them take for granted the brilliance of her achievement, but they also make the case that she deserves to be taken seriously as a major writer and a major thinker. After opening with several short introductory essays, the volume moves on to consider Austen's critical contexts through a series of wide-ranging overviews of her life and works. The section that follows, Critical Readings, provides samples of critical close readings from a number of schools of thought. The volume is rounded out by a chronology of the important events in Austen's life, a list of her works, and a bibliography with suggestions for further reading.

This book proposes an original theory of epistemic justification that offers a new way to relate justification to the epistemic goal of truth-conducive belief. The theory is based on a novel analysis of reliable belief-formation that answers classic objections to reliability theories in epistemology. The analysis generates a way of distinguishing justified belief from believing justifiedly, such that inerrant belief-formation need not be justificatory whereas systemic deception could be. It thereby respects the intuition that standards for justification must be accessible to the believer, while maintaining the essential connection of justification to truth.
