Open Readings: How to Use this LibGuide

Find free, open, public domain, or alternative library readings for use in ENC1101/1102 or LIT1000 at IRSC

This is a collaborative anthology, comprised of literary selections and contributions from the English faculty.  This is also a "living" open-source textbook: Every semester, new additions of short stories, poems, plays, novels, and essays are added as requested.

Legend to Readings in this Guide

Readings in this LibGuide are meant to replace costly textbook assignments by allowing faculty to pick and choose what materials students can access freely online, through the libraries' subscription databases, and openly licensed public domain items. Readings have one of these three symbols to indicate what you can and cannot do with the reading.

Free Online

Available for free online. Readings with this symbol are under copyright. You can link out to the reading that was found freely available online because the website/person who posted it has received permission to do so. You cannot remix, modify, or redistribute this reading unless you seek out permission from the copyright holder. Readings may disappear as people stop maintaining websites.

Available through the libraries' subscription databases. Items in the databases can be viewed by accessing a permalink to the materials in one of the libraries' databases. Users need to login to the library to access. You cannot remix, modify, or redistribute this reading unless you seek out permission from the copyright holder. Readings may disappear as the databases change access to certain publications.

Available in the public domain. Items in the public domain have been licensed this way or more likely have expired copyright. You can remix, modify, and redistribute this reading. This is why the Word file is provided. As more items enter the public domain, more readings will become available.
