Writing a research paper is a process, and it is important to understand the assignment.

First, consult your instructor for guidance.  If your instructor hasn't provided a schedule, create one.  Thinking backwards from the paper deadline will determine how much time you will need to complete each step.  Remember to leave time for revising and rewriting the draft.  A sample schedule might look like this:
