News Literacy (K-12 Resources): Games

Research guide dedicated to resources for grades K-12 on the subject of news literacy.

factitious

Overview:

As a librarian, I have used this game with high school and college students. The benefits are that it has a gotcha element. So, in a large group discussion if students are dismissive of the problems associated with fake news and say they know how to tell the difference between real and fake and then they are asked to play the game, there is an element of surprise when they realize how difficult it can be to evaluate just by reading headlines. The other benefit is that this game increases awareness of news outlets. Many students were unfamiliar with the publications listed--even very famous ones such as NPR. This can be a good way to discuss the news cycle. The downside of this game is that it does not take students long to figure out the trick of searching for the source on Google to see if it is a real news outlet. There are also a limited number of stories, which repeat, so students tire of it after just few minutes.
