Evaluate Your Sources

Librarians at IRSC teach students how to find AND evaluate information before using it as a trustworthy source for an assignment. Faculty can request instruction for students to teach them about these important information literacy skills. We teach students to evaluate all information based on the following criteria:

  • Rationale (why does the source exist?)
  • Authority (is the author identified and have the proper credentials to make such claims?)
  • Date (is the information up to date? is a publication or last updated date listed?)
  • Accuracy (is the information factual? was it reviewed or edited?)
  • Relevancy (is the information relevant to your topic/subject/assignment?)
